Can Daiwa make a reel, the likes of which has never existed before? The kind that people gasp at the sight of, audibly struck with wonder? Can Daiwa design a spinning reel that will shock the people of our times, but incorporate the tradition of flagship products? Daiwa drew and threw away countless sketches before arriving at an infinitely simple, with infinitely high quality reel.
This is the new Daiwa Exist 2022, that is now even lighter and extremely tough. In 2018, Daiwa has introduced the new concept of achieving a synergy between the two contrasting adjectives of Light and Tough. Thinking about this in normal terms, to achieve lightness there is a need to sacrifice either strength, or durability. Even reducing the products weight by one gram implies the outrageous difficulties that lie in wait in that process. If you then aim to simultaneously improve durability, the difficulties become even harsher. Achieving lighter weight and more durability implies difficult work on par with that performed on Formula One racecars, with extraordinary cost and effort spent to create just one product.
Unchanging Feel to Winding Rotation
Lets go to ultimate Durability now. Daiwa believes this to mean the maintenance of primary performance. In the past, reels used under harsh environmental conditions exhibited dropping performance the more that they were used. Taking that to be a thing of the past, what is necessary in order to achieve the ideal of maintaining the products initial winding feel forever, is solid waterproofing that prevents seawater and foreign material from penetrating into the reel itself. Exist is equipped with Daiwas unique Magsealed technology, which fully protects its line roller, main shaft, and drive gear shaft. Its airtight design is further improved through the use of the seamless Monocoque Body technology.
Extreme Weight Cutting
Making reels extremely lightweight means to approach the level at which the reel, becomes like a part of the body. The users sensitivity increases and they are able to use the reel, as freely as if waving their own hand. The Daiwa Exist embodies countless subtle technologies and techniques to reduce the reels weight down to the absolute limit. For example, the body. Using the Monocoqeu Body technology that enables both compactness and robustness, this product managed to cut out more bulk than was ever possible before. Moreover, the spool is so ultrathin that blanking is impossible. This is what Daiwa imagined: achieving a unification of angler and tackle through the extreme lightweight design achieved in Exist.
Light & Strong like a Formula 1 Car
In the history of spinning reels, it was only natural that the housing was a combination of two parts: the body and the body cover. However, with the Monocoque Body structure, the body itself is a rigid frame, durable to twists and bends, and yet it is space-economizing and compact. It is used in the likes of rockets and Formula One vehicles, where durability and space efficiency are required under extreme conditions. In the spinning reel, which contains over 150 parts in its small body, the Minocoque structures impact was truly immense. By eliminating the need for screw space, the drive gear was expanded to its maximum size relative to the dimensions of the body. Now, the body could hold a large-diameter drive gear that covers around 85% of the bodys surface. In other words, bodies of the same size as before, are now able to house much larger gears, and if the gear size were instead kept the same, then extremely compact bodies could be created.
Noise Reduction when Winding
At times, the difference between a catch and no catch, comes down to how sensitively you can pick up on signs and hints of fish lurking underwater. To achieve the sharp sensitivity needed to notice minute differences, it is necessary to reduce the noise of winding rotation as much as possible. This has been achieved by the newly developed Tough Digigear technology. Ultraprecise machining achieves ideal gear teeth surfaces, thereby drastically cutting down on noise from gears, meshing during winding rotation.
Catching More Fish
All anglers have thought of this at least once: the further a reel can cast a lure, the more fish that reel can catch. Daiwa has improved travel distance and eliminated trouble while continuously breaking the limits on reel range, and with the Exist we have arrived at the formula Long Cast (LC) ABS. This technology improves the location and size of the point of contact with the spool, when the line is released, successfully achieving a trouble-free feel to casting, wherein the lure seems to simply come loose from the reel, as well as achieving the longest travel distance. Caught fish are controlled through the strength of ATD, bringing the target in with unprecedented performance.
A new generation, ATD drag system, improves the initial drag system response, by lowering the peak drag max, upon hook setting. Light tackle fishing especially requires a responsive and sensitive adjustment of the drag pressure. The ATD Type-L allows anglers to have more control of the drag, without stress during the fight, by not overloading the line and also causing less stress to the fish.
High Level Winding Precision and Rotation Durability
The drive gear is the most important part in the reel, and there is a trinity of elements that are essential for it to function. The drive gear used in the Daiwa Exist is the Tough Digigear, a further evolution of the preceding Digigear II. This represents a brand new design concept that calculates minute details down to the impact on gear meshing of the application of unexpected forces. By applying ultraprecise machine cutting to materials strengthened through cold-sintering, we achieve the ideal type of gear. These gears enable utterly noiseless winding rotation and respond precisely to the anglers delicate finger touch. For the gear materials, extra super Duralumin is used for its high tensile strength and durability. These three elements combine to achieve the Tough Digigear, offering high-level winding precision and rotation durability without even the slightest error. The Tough Digigear is an evolution of reel sensitivity and of fishing itself.
Not even one Drop of Water Inside
Anglers demand reels that can maintain solid performance even in extreme environments. However, waterproofing the winding mechanism entails some extremely difficult problems. This is because in order for winding to take place, there must be space inside the body for objects to rotate. If that space is closed up for waterproofing purposes, rotational performance will be lost. This problem was solved by an approach that used liquid to block liquids. This is Daiwas unique Magsealed technology, which uses magnetism to create a semi-permanent wall of MagSeal Oil that prevents seawater and dust from gaining entry to the reels interior. Revealed in 2010, this groundbreaking technology has been used for line rollers and ball bearings, and continues to achieve demonstrable results in terms of durability by dramatically lowering the number of product repair cases. In the Exist, the pinion shaft and line roller use Magsealed technology, in addition to Magsealed ball bearings on both ends of the drive gear.
Airdrive Rotor
The newly developed Airdrive Rotor is made from Zaion. Maintaining the strength of the rotor from the 2018 Exist, Daiwa has been able to reduce the weight significantly. The Airdrive Rotor has been designed with focus to create a perfectly round structure, trouble free and flawless rotation have been achieved. The rotor unit itself has seen a 16% weight reduction compared to the previous model (Based on 2500 size reel) and will set the standard for what future rotor design of small spinning reels will be.
Airdrive Bail
Daiwa has constructed a bail arm, smaller in diameter, whilst providing the required strength to achieve a further weight reduction to the front unit. In comparison to the 18 Exist, the Airdrive Bail reduces the weight of the bail by 33% (compared to 2500 size). Daiwa has adjusted the angle of bail setting, to improve the line movement into the roller. Careful attention was given to the roller and slider and individual design alterations were done for each size of the 22 Exist, perfectly adjusting the line management for each size of the reel.
Airdrive Spool
The stand out features of the Airdrive Spool would have to be the newly shaped, spool skirt and the simple aesthetics. Just by looking at the spool it becomes clear that the overall weight has been reduced maximizing the smooth feeling. Reducing the spool weight creates many benefits for a reel; the total weight of the reel is reduced, oscillation is improved, less resistance during winding and rotation, better balance when attached to the rod and of course the reel feels light and easy to fish.
Airdrive Shaft
The Airdrive Shaft has a non-contact structure between the main shaft and the pinion gear. In addition to this, both ends of the pinion gear are now supported with bearings, to relay the crank power from the handle to the rotor with a higher level of efficiency. By adding high quality collars to the main shaft, rotational noise has been reduced significantly. The Airdrive Shaft creates the feel of smooth, quiet rotation and provides anglers with torque and power.
