Undoubtedly, one of Australia’s most popular fish to catch and consume is the Whiting. Predominantly found on beaches and estuary systems along the Australian coast, there are numerous methods to catch these resilient and delicious fish, ranging from live bait to surface lures. Traditionally, anglers used live Yabbies or worms for Whiting, which remains effective, but the approach has evolved significantly. Pursuing Whiting with surface lures has gained immense popularity, offering an exhilarating fishing experience. Small poppers from Zerek, Bassday Sugapens, and Berkely Pop Dogs are highly effective for targeting Whiting. The technique is straightforward, often resulting in multiple Whiting competing for the lure. Fishing during the last three hours of the outgoing tide is optimal in many estuary systems, especially on the flats. Whiting will strike poppers and small stick baits in shallow waters, so casting into the shallows is recommended. Maintain a consistent retrieve speed with occasional pauses. If Bream are attracted to your lure, additional pauses can be beneficial. For poppers, short, sharp pops with the rod tip down will entice Whiting, as they perceive them as prawns skimming the surface.
