The River:
When you think of fly fishing Colorado, you think of fishing the South Platte. Not only is this legendary river one of the most accessible in the state but it truly holds some of the best fishing in the west! This river which has its headwaters high in the Mosquito Range of the Rocky Mountains flows south-east through South Park Valley and into a string of reservoirs: Antero, Spinney Mountain, Eleven Mile, Cheesman and ultimately Chatfield. Not only do the free flowing sections of this fishery offer outstanding angling opportunities, but the still water does too. You will pass through high mountain grassland, steep sided canyons and ultimately the urban fishery of the Denver South Platte.
This Gold Medal western trout river is home to wild naturally reproducing Brown, and Rainbow Trout. You will also find Cutthroats and the Cuttbow Hyrid in the sections between reservoirs called the Dream Stream.
Success on this is river isn’t easy. Fly selection, presentation and depth is extremely important. Because of its location in relation to Denver, this river system sees a lot of anglers and the trout are smart. Go small and deep and you will turn some amazing fish. You will often see nice fish held up in deep pools. Be stealthy. The South Platte is a very diverse river with many distinct sections, and at any given time midges, caddis, stoneflies, hoppers and streamers can often produce great fish on varying sections of the river. Ultimately as the river passes through Denver, carp, bass, walleye and rainbow trout can be had on the fly!
The public access on this river is outstanding. Covering the hundreds miles of river from headwaters to downtown Denver the river often runs right along a major paved or dirt road. Access to Eleven Mile Canyon requires a day pass, as well as some sections of the Deckers stretch. With the exception of Cheesman Canyon and a few sections above it that are hike in only, you can be setting up your rig at your car while hearing the river rush by.
Please be aware of Mountain Lions and Rattle Snakes in stretches of this river system near Cheeseman Canyon.
