Japanese company Maria has created a new lure category. The Fla-Pen Shallow is not a stickbait, or a minnow but a combination of the two. Being a sinking lure, the Fla-Pen Shallow is able to fish all levels of the water column and can be retreived using a number techniques, including straight crank, twitching, twitch and pause and with a high rod tip and steady retrieve it will swim like a wakebait. Once retrieved the Fla-Pen swings of up to 90 degrees to the left and right.

The Maria Fla-Pen is a very unique lure, with a folding rear flap, which closes on the cast and opens on the retrieve. This effect helps the lure avoid losing distance during casts, even in the presence of strong headwings. Once the water starts to drag, the lip falls as it resists the water and the Fla-Pen begins to wobble. This rear flap creates a unique wave motion (turbulence behind the lure) which is very similar to that of a natural fish, during escape.

Maria has improved the buoyancy level of the new Fla Pen Shallow, by modifying the shape of the flap. Hence the shallow model was developed, with a flap that brings resistance to more water. However, Maria further reviewed the weight balance of the Fla-Pen, to correspond to a shallow field of water depth such as rivers, estuaries, etc.

In the shallow lure type, the backward waves reproduce the escape action of a fish, swimming in the surface layer. The power of the “backward wave” was inherited in the shallow version, to attract fish lurking in shallow waters.

The flap demonstrates its power not only in action, but also in casting. The opening and closing type flap is folded at the time of casting, so the air resistance is reduced. It also plays the role of a horizontal wing, so the lure flies straight and glides on a steady flight course. At the same time the flap opens during the retrieve, rising the lure and quickly displaying its action.
